Go download Moonstone *now* and see for yourself what all the fuss is about!

Problems Running Moonstone? - Commonly Asked Questions...

1. I am trying to play Moonstone PC via DOSBox but I can't type in the backslash "\". (This is a common problem for Scandinavian, French and German gamers.)

Answer: Try two forward slashes "//" instead!

2. I have killed the Dragon, the Guardian, emptied all of the lairs and (most importantly) collected one of the four moonstones, but the bloody game still does not end. What the hell is going on?

Answer: Travel to Stonehenge (bottom left of the map in the forests) with your particular moonstone (new, full, half). As soon as the moonstone that you possess is aligned with the corresponding phase of the moon (basically keep clicking upon Stonehenge), a message will appear congratulating you on finishing the game. The ending sequence will then trigger. Well done!

3. I keep getting "Insert Disk A" messages on the PC version. Help!

Answer: Most Win XP, Me and 98 users will not be able to run the game, either from Windows itself or DOS. Instead, you will need to download and install a utility called Dosbox. Please scroll a little further down the page for further instructions...

4. What are the keyboard controls for Moonstone under DOSBox?

Answer: Arrow keys to move, Return to attack, select etc... Simple!

5. I can't get WinUAE to work! I wanna play Moonstone on Amiga!!!

Answer: Never fear. Just scroll down a bit and read about what Whitesnake has done for all of you lucky buggers!

Emulation...

Okay then - I bet you're all chomping at the bit to get your hands on this beauty of a game again so here's what to do...

If you  still happen to own an Amiga, you can always hunt down an old copy of this rare classic at a car boot sale or from someplace like eBay. (But be prepared to pay £30+!) Likewise with the PC version. However, Moonstone is now officially free Abandonware so why not just download it...

For Amiga (AGA Fixed Version) here?

27.05.04. Lots of you have been complaining about having a few problems getting WinUAE and its various configurations to load, so forum member Whitesnake has chipped in and done us all a big favour. Read on...

I have put together Moonstone with a special MiniWinUAE version which only has A500 support (This keeps the archive small). All you have to do is run winuae_mini.exe and the game starts.

The controls have all been set up, as well as all disk swapping and any other configuration options so that people new to Amiga emulation can enjoy this game in it's original form.

Here are some of the controls:

Player One: Arrow Keys, and Right Ctrl.
Player Two: Keypad Keys, and 0.

To quit all you need to do is push Left Ctrl and F11.
If you are experienced in using WinUAE then you can push F12 which will let you adjust other options.

Download Whitesnake's trouble-free solution here.

etting the bastard to work - PC standalone...

Moonstone categorically WILL NOT WORK ON WINDOWS XP, with Windows 98 and Me also having all kinds of problems running it. For the love for God please stop emailing me about this! SEE THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH FOR A SIMPLE SOLUTION...

Moonstone for the PC is now playable on *all Windows versions* with the minimum of hassle via a great programme called DOSBox from http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/. Simply download the current version from the site and install as instructed below...

Thanks to Funkmaster P in the Tavern forum for making me realise I should do this btw!

1. Firstly stick the Moonstone directory at c:\moon (remove Moonstone folder but cut moon part out and put it in c:)
2. Run DOSBox and type the following...
mount c c:\moon
3. Then type
c:
4. It simply remains for you to type
ms.exe
5. Wahey - no more "Insert Disk A" messages!

If you still can't get the PC version to run (what the bloody hell is wrong with you?), go get the Amiga one instead and run it via emulation as described below. Surprisingly, if you have a decent video card and enable OpenGL or D3D it looks and sounds miles better anyhows! Ah, emulation...making the classics even better than you remembered™.

etting the bastard to work - Amiga being emulated on a PC...

For those of you that are new to this emulation malarkey, an emulator is a piece of software that emulates a piece of hardware. So, in this case, we will be emulating an Amiga on a PC. But I digress...

The emulator I use and personally recommend is WinUAE. If you don't have it go get it from www.winuae.net. I don't know anything about Fellow so if you use that emulator I can't help you. Anyways, these are the particular settings I use to run Moonstone. They took me ages to figure out! Duh! BTW, the following might sound really complicated but - trust me - it's not! 5 minutes and with any luck you should be getting stuck back into Moonstone again! Right, here goes...

Here is my own config file for download so add it to the WinUAE "configurations" directory and load it up as your configuration! (I think it's called "Rob's config".) All you need to do after that is point to the Kickstart.rom in "Rom" and the Moonstone adf. disks in "Floppies". (disk 1 in drive 0, disk 2 in drive 1 and disk 3 in drive 2.) Piece of pie...

* You'll need the Kickstart.rom to get the emulator to run.

Right, everything should now run perfectly. This is what works on my setup. DON'T COME WHINGING IF IT DOESN'T WORK ON YOURS! Go ask on a WinUAE forum if you still can't get the game to go.

The above shows you where to put the 3 Moonstone adf. files as well as the Kickstart rom. Bear in mind that your files may be located in a different directory to my own, so just use the browse command to look for them...
