Updated 6th Oct, 2011. Welcome to the Box Art, Music & Wallpaper page. Come glimpse the images that made my heart leap when I first saw Moonstone in my local computer shop all those years ago!

Concept Art

Update 05/11/11: Now presenting as-yet unseen concept art kindly donated to the Tavern by the creator of Moonstone himself, Rob Anderson. Pretty amazing, huh?

On the 1st April 2011 (no Fool!) I received a wonderful surprise in my inbox :)

Hello Rob Taylor!

First off, let me just say that I consider the Moonstone Tavern to be fantastic, it's really a shrine to one of the best (and sadly too forgotten) "low fantasy" games ever.

My name is Joakim Hellstedt, and nowadays I'm a freelancing concept artist - mostly for the videogame industry. I and many others I work/have worked with love Moonstone and have many times nagged various bosses over the years to look up the possibilities of a remake - or at least the possibility to create something in the same spirit.

Even though it never happened, I and a concept artist friend of mine (Henrik Sahlström) chose to create something anyway! What if Moonstone was to be made again?

With this in mind we created a set of concept art (of various truthfulness to the original - most freedoms taken, we consider, pretty reasonable).

You being one of the few people with a real Moonstone passion, I wanted to make sure you could share them:

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=217205

(We did them in our spare time, I made 3 and Henrik a whopping 15 (!) over the last year or so - I blame my lack of submissions compared to Henrik's abundance on the fact that he is single..)

We still dream of a day when we can have Moonstone playthrough without crashes :) And be it original or a proper remake, it would be an excellent addition to Xbox Live/PSN.

I hope it's to your enjoyment! (Feel free to forward it to the game creators if you think they'd enjoy it as well).

Below is a selection of the guys' incredible art - it's both utterly evocative and uncannily close to how I'd imagine the original Moonstone team might have envisaged things back in the day. What a huge treat for us fans!

Update: 17.09.06

Mental! Just received an email from a Moonstone fan named Doodah regarding a song he's written as a tribute to the game. Here's what he had to say...

First I want to applaud your site - a shrine to one of the best games that ever existed! I remember days, nights, weeks, months just playing Moonstone on my Amiga with my Cheetah joystick…... In my life I have strived to play as many games as possible, but I still see Moonstone as one of the BEST. As a result of my love for the game which I still play via Dosbox, a few pals and I wrote this song in memory and dedication of Moonstone. It is not truly complete yet, since we're planning more verses - but will it ever be finished? I have attached the mp3 to this email, I just thought you might want to hear it! Hopefully you will like it, Doodah.

...and here's the song itself. You can definitely see the guys are influenced by Led Zeppelin - it's like a cross between Immigrant Song and Stairway to Heaven. In other words, pretty darn head-bangingly good! Nice one Doodah, now finish those final few verses and chart success surely beckons!

Box Art & Packaging...

Click on a piccie for the full size version - many thanks to Olli Knagge for performing this great service for me! Check out his stellar links page dedicated to his favourite classic game-related sites: The Rings of Zilfin!

3D Moonstone Box!

Click on image for the 3D version. It's about a 250kb download, so please be patient. The 3D Boxes are vrml (.wrl) files, and you therefore need a vrml plugin / viewer to open them within your browser...

Windows Contact from Blaxxun
Apple Mac Cortona from ParallelGraphics

I think you'll all agree that it's much better solution than having to pay £40 at Ebay for the privilege like I did!

Postermap Wallpaper...

Finally available for download is the fold-out postermap that was originally bundled with Moonstone. Click on the image for a 2mb full size version that you can use as your new desktop wallpaper. Hooray for Olli!

The Three Different Versions of Moonstone...

Images once again courtesy of my fine German friend Olli Knagge, lucky owner of all three versions of Moonstone. From left: Moonstone PC, Moonstone Amiga and Moonstone Amiga Limited Edition (inc. Knightmare rolling demo) Click on each for full size!

Moonstone ASCII Art...

Brilliant piece of ASCII art I found whilst trawling on Google's Usenet Archive for Moonstone-related material. I believe the author is Marcin Gliñski. Click on the image for the full size version.

More Fan Art...

Michael Hanson's superb rendition of a ballok - "those lovely little head-munching beasties we know so well. It's quick, and a little rough around the edges, but it aint easy gettin a pic of those fellas. They move pretty fast!" Click on the image for the full size version.
